Standard Combos, Areals & Smash Attacks

When you press "A" on the Game Cube or Wii Remote and Nunchuck controllers, "a" on the classic controller, or "2" on the Wii Remote on it's side, you will perform a standard attack. For Retro Smash and Melee, you are required to press the button rapidly to do many attacks in succession, usually the same ones over and over. In Brawl, you can also do this, or as an alternative you can just hold the standard attack button to do many attack in succession. This will be referred to as "Rapid attack".

Rapid attacks are useful when you want to release a quick attack either to build damage upon, or bat away foes. Some are quicker than others, like Kirby does many consecutive punches upon pressing rapidly/holding down the standard attack button. However, Ike for example, does three attack in succession, not being nearly as fast as Kirby's, but TONS more powerful. Ganondorf cannot perform rapid attacks, but rather, one punch. If you do consecutive hits, he just slowly punches about every other second.

Strong attacks, or "tilts" are directional standard attacks. When you tilt your joystick or D-pad in a direction and press the standard attack button, you perform a tilt. Tilts are also used (usually) to lair damage upon opponents, and finally finishing them off with an areal or smash attack (we'll talk about that later). Tilts are basically level 2 of your most strong attacks, with rapid attacks being level 1.

Lastly, we have our Smash Attacks. Smash Attacks are commenced when you quickly and simultaneously tap the control stick in a direction while press the standard attack button. These are usually by far the most powerful of attacks. Newbies sometimes have trouble trying this, but it becomes second-nature after a while. You will find Smash Attacks to be immensely useful.

Remember, the more damage, the further they will go after being attacked. When they have a very low amount of damage (0%-20%), use your rapid attacks. When they have a normal amount of damage (21%-50%), you can use your tilts. When damage goes over that, smashes will bring them down. This is just one of many different strategies.
